Contender or Champ? SLIM Brand Excellence 2014 kicks off

By Sarah Hannan Themed ‘Are you only a contender or are you the Champ?’, the 13th SLIM Brand Excellence invites brands to take up the challenge of getting into the ring and fight head-on with the heavyweights in the business world to be the “champ.” The much-awaited SLIM Brand Excellence organised by the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) kicked off with a briefing for media, judges and participants held at Hilton Residencies (JAIC) on 25 June. The session saw an impressive participation of over 200 marketing professionals who were briefed on this year’s awards and the entry process. SLIM Brand Excellence has always take a special place in the SLIM calendar and looked up to by the industry. It recognises best brands in Sri Lanka and reward brand custodians with distinct appreciation to those organisations which deploy their resources for these brands. SLIM President Kalana Rathnayaka addressing the gathering stated: “This is an excellent opportunity to showcase the great work those brand custodians put behind their exceptional brands and a platform to be rewarded for such outstanding work. Every brand has a unique story of its own and a vision which will be appraised by a panel of judges with years of experience. Participation in this event itself is an assessment of the brand which is an opportunity for improvement.” Brand Ambassador for SLIM Brand Excellence 2014 and MAS Holdings Group Director Dian Gomes noted: “Whatever you do I believe that given the right opportunity and training Sri Lanka can become world class. Whether it is boxing or in real life we have to accept defeat and get up to fight again.” Explaining the award categories and eligibility criteria SLIM Brand Excellence 2014 Project Chairman Roshan Fernando commented: “Brands that we know and love today, all started out as ‘Working Brands’, which then became ‘Master Brands’ before reaching the ultimate ‘Super Brand’ status. For 13 years, SLIM Brand Excellence celebrates brands and recognises their custodians for their efforts in raising brands to reach their ultimate potential.” The competition is now open for entries which will close on 31 July. Award categories There are 12 categories under which entries could be submitted and entries can be made under multiple categories. The highest score in each of the six main categories – Product Brand of the Year, Service Brand of the Year, Innovative Brand of the Year, Turnaround Brand of the Year, Local Brand of the Year and Export Brand of the Year will be evaluated by the judges in awarding the ‘Brand of the Year’. Thus, no separate entry is required for the ‘Brand of the Year award’. Main Awards: Product Brand of the Year and Service Brand of the Year. Special Awards: Innovative Brand of the Year, Turnaround Brand of the Year, Local Brand of the Year, Best New Entrant of the Year, International Brand of the Year,  SME Brand of the Year, CSR Brand of the Year, Export Brand of the Year and  B2b Brand of the Year Recognition Award: Regional Brand Recognition Award: Etisalat, Singer Plus, 4Ever and Vision Care have partnered this year’s SLIM Brand Excellence as Official Telecommunication Partner, Main Sponsor, Silver Sponsor and Co-Sponsor respectively, in addition to a host of service sponsors. Official handing over of sponsorship cheques were also held during the event following the briefing session. The grand finale of SLIM Brand Excellence 2014 is scheduled for 21st October at Sirimavo Bandaranaike Memorial Exhibition Centre, BMICH which is billed to be the biggest event to date with an audience of over 900. As the national body for marketing, SLIM has been in the forefront in proliferating marketing knowledge and uplifting the profile of marketing profession in the country. Uplifting the standard of business performance, improving quality of brand management and development in organisations, improving efficiency of marketing, recognising and motivating exceptional performance of brands or organizations as well as the people behind their success, and proliferating the knowledge of branding among the fraternity were amongst the objectives of launching the Awards back in 2002.
