Chennai: Emirates Airlines, one of the largest air cargo operators in India, has imposed a fuel surcharge for all general cargo shipments out of India.
This is due to increase in the global fuel price and is based on a fuel index, according to its Senior Vice-President, Cargo Revenue Optimisation, Mr Pradeep Kumar.
The surcharge ranges between Rs 16 and Rs 34 a kg, depending on the destination. In a communication to its customers, the airline said it was “constrained to pass a minor portion of those (fuel increase) costs to you by a way of marginal increase.”
Mr Kumar said the surcharge will fluctuate according to the global fuel price.
“We do not have any control over the fuel price. When it comes down, the surcharge will also reduce accordingly,” he said. Emirates carried 111 million tonnes of cargo from India in the financial year endedMach 31, 2010.
This was 15.49 per cent of India’s total air cargo market. From January-November, the airline carried 87,706 tonnes of cargo, he said.
