Ferrari: Vettel will drive for us sooner or later

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has said that the Scuderia would love to sign Sebastian Vettel.

Vettel, who became the youngest F1 champion in the history of the sport this year, is contracted to Red Bull until 2011 and the Milton Keynes-based outfit also has an option on the German for 2012. However it would appear that the 23-year-old is very much on Ferrari’s radar.

“Sebastian is fast, intelligent and young,” Montezemolo told Express. “He will drive a red car sooner or later.”

Indeed it is understood Ferrari is keen to pair Sebastian Vettel with Fernando Alonso in 2012, a potentially formidable line-up, although hardly likely to be the most harmonious.

The Cologne ‘paper also adds that Ferrari recently tried to poach Red Bull’s design guru, Adrian Newey. Newey allegedly rejected the offer.

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz meanwhile admitted recently that the Milton Keynes-based outfit may struggle to keep Vettel in the long term.

“[If the car was not competitive], we would let him go even if he had a contract,” Mateschitz told Welt am Sonntag last month.

“Seb wants to drive for Ferrari some day. [But] we will make it as difficult a decision for him as possible.”
