ICASL scholarships for top A/L achievers

The top scorers at the 2010 GCE Advanced Level examination were recently awarded scholarships by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) giving them the opportunity to embark on a most sought after career in accountancy.

Students from across the country who scored the highest at the Advanced Level examination in commerce, engineering/physical science, medicine/bio science and the arts streams were awarded full scholarships under the ‘top 10’ scholarship category by the ICASL, which is the country’s national accounting body, established in the late 1959 by an Act of Parliament.

The ‘top 10’ scholarship awards was initiated in 2002 under the ICASL’s corporate social responsibility initiative.

This year too, the top 10 scorers from the commerce stream at the August 2010 GCE A/L examinations representing Colombo, Kuliyapitiya, Tissamaharama, Kolonnawa and Galle were awarded scholarships at a ceremony held mid February which was graced by S. B. Dissanayake, Minister of Higher Education as Chief Guest and Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne, Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education as Guest of Honour.

Recipients of the top 10 scholarship winners in the commerce stream (rank from first to 10th) are:

C.A.W. Anthony from Kuliyapitiya M.M.V., K.P.B. Deshanie from Devi Balika – Colombo 8, K.K.W.R. Perera from Visaka B.M.V. – Colombo 5, J.M.S.S. Jayamanna from Kuliyapitiya M.M.V, V.J. Dissanayake from St. Peters’s College – Colombo 4, S. M. Hettiarachchi from Debarawewa M.M.V., Tissamaharama, P.R.S.G. Perera from Kolonnawa Balika M.V, W.A.P.M. Weerasinghe from Siridhamma College – Galle, C.N. Udawatte, from Visaka B.M.V – Colombo 5 and H.P.D.M. Thilakarathna from Rathnawalie Balika M.V. – Colombo.

Winners of the scholarship awards from the engineering/physical science streams are:

W.M.V.B. Wijekoon from Royal College (1st ), H.M.S.T. Herath from Royal College (2nd ) and T. Pranavan from Hartly College, Jaffna (9th ).

Winners of the scholarship awards from the medicine/bio science streams are:

R.A.W. Sevwandi from Southland Vidyalaya, Galle (2nd ), M.A.I. Amaratunga from Sangamitta Balika M.V., Galle (7th) and Y.D. Kolambage of Richmond College, Galle (10th).

M.C.N. Perera from Holy Family Convent, Colombo who was ranked 10th in the Arts stream, was also awarded a scholarship at the recently concluded ceremony.

ICASL awards Madhavi First in order of Merit Prize

THE Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) recently awarded the First in order of Merit Prize to E. C. Madhavi, a former student from Princess of Wales’ College for obtaining the highest marks at the Certificate in Accounting and Business II (CAB II) examination held in September 2010.

An elated Madhawi, commenting on her achievement elaborated that she had always wanted to embark on a career path which would bring her immense success.

“I chose the chartered accountancy course offered by the ICASL because not only was the institute highly respected, but accountants were very much sought-after in the business world both in Sri Lanka and abroad and Chartered Accountants always enjoyed a higher level of honor. I am glad I made the right choice and this award only cements that fact,” she added.

Incidentally, Madhavi who is a first year student of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, following an undergraduate degree programme, was also awarded first in order of Merit Prize at the Certificate in Accounting and Business I (CAB I) examination in March 2010

An all-rounder at school, she held various positions during her school tenure, including the secretary of the Commerce Society, and also bagged the commerce prize at her school’s annual prize distribution ceremony apart from the oriental dancing prize and a various other achievements.

Madhavi sat for her GCE Ordinary Level examination in 2006 and subsequently for the GCE Advanced Level examination in 2009 where she obtained a Z. Score of 2.2666 and was ranked 94th all-island.
