In coordination with the Sri Lankan Government, the State of Israel has decided to send emergency aid to alleviate the hardship of the many thousands of Sri Lankans who were left without shelter following the devastating floods that recently hit the eastern part of the country. This support is supplied through MASHAV, Israel’s agency for International Development Cooperation.
The aid, which includes half a tonne of water purification tablets designed to address emergency situations characterised by lack of drinking water, is being air lifted from Israel. The tablets come in various sizes, and are catered to disinfect and purify variable quantities of non-potable water. In addition, large amounts of multipurpose disinfecting agent for hospital and clinic use are also being sent from Israel. These are unique products made by “Concept”, an Israeli company that specialises in disinfection and water purification solutions, and have been successfully used by the Israel Defence Forces and various international agencies. This consignment is a gift from the people of Israel to the people of Sri Lanka.
Ambassador of Israel to Sri Lanka Mark Sofer, said: “Our decision to assist the people of Sri Lanka at this time of need is only natural, considering the friendship between our two countries. Israel has supported Sri Lanka in confronting the various challenges it faced in the past, during the tsunami and other times of crisis, and will continue to stand by the people of Sri Lanka at times of need.”
