Jetwing takes over management of new Tangalla Bay!

Jetwing Hotels has taken over the management of Tangalla Bay and completed renovations of the luxurious resort which is billed to open in mid-February 2011.

Surrounded by the waters of the Indian Ocean, the Tangalla Bay is a hotel uniquely constructed in the shape of a majestic ship. Entering it reminds one of boarding a ship, as the hotel has 34 cabins which are housed on four decks.

Each cabin has a large private balcony which provides guests with a panoramic view of the ocean which will leave you feeling windswept and very much at sea (minus those feelings of sea-sickness). Each cabin will be air conditioned and spoil you for choice with all amenities. Attached bathrooms ensure hot and cold water to meet a guest’s preference. A regular diet of sunrises rising above, the sound of waves presents an idyllic paradise holiday away from the noise and grime of city life. The town of Tangalla itself personifies relaxation although it has a busy market and a bustling fishing harbour.

Dining at Tangalla Bay will be a mouth-watering affair that has come to be expected with Jetwing Hotels. The Dining Saloon promises to offer a choice of delectable Western and Eastern cuisine with specialty sea food fresh from the ocean. So expect yummy and excitingly concocted dishes of prawns, lobsters, crabs and every type of seafood under the sun. Dining will be an event in itself as the outdoor terrace is situated on the west side of the hotel offering a charming view of the sea. As a cool sea breeze blows across the terrace, prepare for sumptuous barbeques as the sun sets into the ocean, and enjoy a unique experience of dining on rocks. The east wing of the hotel will consist of a well stocked air conditioned bar which opens out onto a garden overlooking the bay.  

Activities on offer at the Tangalla Bay will make you never want to finish your stay in one of Sri Lanka’s southernmost towns. The pool with its vanishing edge opening out to the ocean gives it a truly infinite effect that makes you feel you are at sea and complemented with a six seat Jacuzzi making it an ideal place to unwind or just hang out any time of the day according to your fancy. Entertainment will be part and parcel of the hotel’s activities as there will be nights of entertainment and days of outdoor smorgasbords leaving you well on the beach.

Tangalla Bay will also provide a variety of excursions as visits will be organised to cultural sites such as the Wewurukannala temple with its giant 165ft Buddha and the ancient Mulkirigalla rock temple. At the rock temple there will be a tour of a series of natural caves with their distinctive wall paintings and Buddha statues. Other interesting places on the itinerary would be to a blow hole and to villages that carry out traditional industries such as brass works, coir, pottery and weaving. Wild life and nature lovers will not be disappointed with night excursions to the turtle beaches of Rekawa and entire day tours for bird watching at Bundala and Kalamatiya Lagoon, Likewise the popular wild-life safaris of Yala and Uda Walawe will be easily accessible.

Thus it is clearly the time to do as the old proverb advises; which is to “hoist your sail when the wind is fair”. The Tangalle bay intends to construct a pier which will operate pleasure cruises and night fishing excursions and anchor water sports such as jet skiing, water skiing, banana riding and hang gliding. Plans to also run a school for sports fishing and fishing voyages to Kirimatiya, Hambantota, Kirinda and Pothuvil is all on the cards.
