THE National Safety Day will be held in Jaffna. The government has declared 26 December; the day tsunami hit the country in 2004 as the National safety day and this year’s event will be held at the Weerasingham Hall in Jaffna.
A nation-wide two minute silence would be maintained from 9.25 a.m to 9.27 a.m on Sunday (26) as a mark of respect for all those who died in the 2004 tsunami, the Disaster Management centre said.
The Cabinet of ministers decided to hold this year’s event in Jaffna and the Minister of Disaster Management, Mahinda Amaraweera has asked all citizens in the country to observe silence from 9.25 a.m to 9.27 a.m as a mark of respect for those who died in the tsunami.
The government has taken the initiative to set up an early warning network with 100 warning towers island wide. 50 tsunami warning centres have already been set up throughout the coastal areas of the country which also includes the setting up of fire units under local government authorities.
