On a proposal by the Minister of Sports Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Cabinet this week approved the signing of an Anti-doping agreement with UNESCO.

This is for the elimination of doping in sports and to amend the Sports Law No.25 of 1973 and other relevant legislation as found necessary.

The objective of UNESCO is to provide cooperation among nations for peace and security through the development of education, science and culture.

“Since sports play an important role in the protection of health and physical education, the need to encourage and coordinate international cooperation towards the elimination of doping in sports has been greatly felt,” the Government said.
