President focuses on education in Southern Province

President Mahinda Rajapaksa has directed the relevant officials of the Southern Province to take measures to improve the conditions at rural schools in the province.

The President, who was chairing the progress review meeting of the Southern Province held on Saturday at the Weligama Urban Council Auditorium, focused his attention on the subject of education in the province.

President Rajapaksa pointed out that there was no teacher shortage in government schools in the province and said that according to statistics there was a teacher for every 16 students.

The President also discussed the progress of many development projects under the Mahinda Chinthana programme that are currently underway in the province.

Chief Minister of Southern Province Shan Wijayalal, Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasooriya, Ministers, Piyasena Gamage, Dullas Alahapperuma, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Deputy Ministers Luxman Yapa Abeywardena, Gunarathna Weerakoon, MP Namal Rajapaksa, Sajin Vas Gunawardena, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunge, Members of the Southern Provincial Council, Government Agents, Secretaries to Ministries and other senior government officials were also present.
