Sri Lanka Shipping submits six proposals for Mahinda Rajapaksa port in Hambantota

Sri Lanka Shipping Company Ltd., (SLSCL) has submitted six proposals to set up business ventures in the Mahinda Rajapaksa Port of Magampura in Hambantota following request for proposals from the Ministry of Ports and Aviation and Sri Lanka Ports Authority.

The six ventures proposed are Bunkering Services; Bagging of Bulk Fertilizer; Construction of Warehouse alongside Quay; Operational Base for Salvage Station; Operation of Harbour Towage and Blending Tea.

SLSCL is a leading company in the maritime industry with its origins tracing back to 1956.

Having been incorporated Coastal Shipping Company Limited to Charter, Own and operate cargo vessels in the South Asia region, then it was the only local shipping line in the country.

It commenced business by chartering and subsequently owning small cargo vessels for the liner trades from Colombo to the Middle East and the Sub Continent and held a leading position as a Carrier of traditional exports to these areas.  With the  incorporation of the  Ceylon Shipping Corporation  in 1971 and the change in  Government policy  whereby a Cargo Reservation Scheme was introduced  to  favour the  Shipping Corporation , the Company went through a difficult period of business due to the restrictive government policy in  booking cargo .

Together with its subsidiaries the Company handles  a range of marine activity from Ship/Tug  Owning, Ship Management, Ship Agency, and Bunkering to  services in  Quay side bulk/bagging, Customs House Agency, Logistics, Clearing and Forwarding,  Warehousing,  and Transport Engineering .   It is considered the leading Towage and Salvage Company in Sri Lanka and a reputed supplier of Bunker fuels.  Sri Lanka Shipping Co., Ltd   owns and operates four ocean going tugs for towage and salvage ,  and four tankers  which are engaged for bunkering and a mini-bulk carrier operating in the Southeast Asia.
