Main opposition United National Party (UNP) has asked the government to issue an official statement on President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit to the United States.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a press conference that the President’s visit to the US was not a private visit as stated by the government.

According to Attanayake, the government has hidden the truth from the country by saying the President is on a private visit.

He has said that the government should reveal the truth behind the visit. He has also added that the government should not hide things if the President is summoned by the US State Department.

The State Department has repeatedly said that there is no meeting between a US Government official and President Rajapaksa.
