USS Services Ltd., a leading company in Sri Lanka dealing with fibre glass raw materials, has obtained the internationally-recognised ISO 9001:2008 certification for Quality Management Systems.

The certification by the prestigious ACS Registrars Ltd., headquartered in West Midlands, UK, was received by the USS Services Chairman Udaya Kulatileke and Managing Director Sarath Silva from Harshanath K. De Silva, Country Manager Ascent Lanka.

USS Services, which is engaged in import, export and distribution of a wide range of high quality fibre glass raw materials, will be able to further expand its foreign marketing business.

The certification of registration covers import, export and distribution of fibre glass raw materials, insulation materials, industrial chemicals, marine and hardware items and was finalised following audits by a leading team of auditors from Ascent Lanka, which has overseas offices in India, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Malaysia, Tanzania and Nigeria.

Silva, forwarding a message on behalf of Chairman Kulatileke, stated that the growth and activities of USS Services as a fully-fledged company had been in the import, export and distribution of fibreglass raw materials, insulation materials, industrial chemicals and solvents, marine and hardware items islandwide for a number of years.

Raw materials are imported from Taiwan, Malaysia, Dubai, India, United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia manufactured under ISO 9002 standards complying to the rules of International Classification Societies such as Lloyds (UK), BSMI Taiwan Standards Bureau, Japan Testing Center for Construction Materials, Nippon Kyokai (Japan) to name a few.   The fibre glass boat construction project is its new venture which has been started with feasible studies and has shown encouragement. With the launch of this project the company will be in a position to cater to the requirements of the fisher-folk whilst assisting the country in local production, thereby granting employment opportunities to many.

“We captured the overseas market through our quality products due to our dedicated and I wish to state with pride that Maldives is the largest buyer of our fibreglass materials. In the local market we enjoy a wide circle of reputed clients in the state and private sector as well as small and medium scale industrialists. Amongst our wide circle of clients are Navy, Army, Sri Lanka Ports Authority, Dockyard Ltd., Nerd Centre of Sri Lanka Ceynor Foundation Ltd., Neil Fernando & Co and leading boatyards situated at almost every main fishing village,” Silva said.

Sarath added that the success of the company had been due to high quality production given at a competitive price, which paid dividends enabling it to grow rapidly.  “Our hard work reaped results, as we were awarded the Sunfo Economic Development International Award in 2005. The company underwent a big setback when in 2006 it was destroyed by a big fire which brought down the warehouse to ashes. We rose to new heights from the fires of adversity and came back with a vengeance in 2008. We are proud to say that we are confident and capable of handling more business than before as our staff is groomed to achieve the desired results,” Silva asserted.

The recognition of the ISO 9001: 2008 is a great achievement for a company which began with a staff of just four and has now grown to over 50 with branches in Negombo, Beruwala and Matara with the head office in Pepiliyana, Boralesgamuwa, Silva added.
