Virtusa wins special award for Emergency Response at JASTECA Awards 2013

Recognised for the Rehabilitation Management System built for the Bureau of Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Sri Lanka

Virtusa Corporation, a global IT services company that combines innovation, technology leadership and industry solutions to transform the customer experience, announced that it has won the Special Award for Emergency Response at the 18th Annual Japan Sri Lanka Cultural Association (JASTECA) Awards 2013, held recently in Colombo. The award was presented in recognition of the Rehabilitation Management System (RMS) built by Virtusa for the Bureau of Commissioner General of Rehabilitation (BCGR), Sri Lanka. The RMS software developed by Virtusa in 2009 assisted BCGR to track and maintain rehabilitee information, their educational and vocational training needs and rehabilitation progress. Virtusa also set up a fully equipped Digital Learning Centre (DLC) in Vavuniya to facilitate IT training for the

ex-combatants. Upon completion of the rehabilitation process, the DLC was handed over to the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka, to be utilised by the students at its IT Faculty. The program was awarded a Laureate in the Emerging Technology category at Computerworld’s Honours Program in 2011. “We are delighted to be recognised for our sustainability program, which focuses on creating and sustaining a positive social impact,” said Virtusa Director Technology Chamindra De Silva, who was instrumental in developing the RMS. “Virtusa believes in leveraging its technology knowledge and competence for the social benefit of the communities we work and live in. In the aftermath of the war the scale of rehabilitation needs motivated us to support the rehabilitation process by developing a Rehabilitation Management System. The system helped manage and administer 200,000+ training hours to the rehabilitates amongst other needs.” “We are extremely happy on the impact the Rehabilitation Management System and DLC are having on the community,” said Virtusa Strategic Sustainability Initiatives director Denver De Zylva, who initiated and directed the projects. “DLC is now being used to enhance the IT education of students in the Northern Province. We would like to thank JASTECA for expanding the scope of awards to cover Sustainability and CSR activities of corporates. We trust that this would be an impetus to the wider community in understanding the importance and benefits of investing in Sustainability and CSR programs.” The Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA), established in 1984, is a non-profit service organisation and functions as the alumni of the Overseas Human Resources and Industry Development Association (HIDA) Japan. JASTECA assists large corporates, the Government, as well as small and medium industries in various management disciplines.
