In a bid to address the persistent challenge of apprehending criminals swiftly, the Acting Inspector General of Police Deshbandu Tennakoon inaugurated the automatic facial recognition system at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake.

Unveiled during an awareness program at the BIA auditorium on 6 January, the system marks a significant stride forward in the 157-year history of Policing.

Collaboratively implemented by the Sri Lanka Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and Immigration Department, the system captures facial images of passengers arriving or departing. Equipped with 16 cameras—eight at the arrival terminal and eight at the departure terminal at BIA is poised to bolster this cutting-edge technology further.

The initiative, proposed by a committee established six months ago to combat organised criminal activities in the country, is a long-term solution to the issue of criminals entering and leaving the country undetected. The urgency of the matter was underscored by the escape of 42 criminals who committed murders within hours of the crimes.

As part of a comprehensive strategy, the CID compiled information on 1,092 serious criminals in Sri Lanka, linking it to the newly inaugurated automated face recognition system at BIA.

This database includes details from international red warrants issued by Interpol, enhancing the system’s effectiveness in identifying and apprehending criminals. What sets this system apart is its capability to identify individuals based on photos, even if they are 15 to 20 years old. The technology can discern individuals despite changes in appearance, including those who have undergone sexual transition stages.

Upon detection of a potential match, the system emits a distinctive warning sound, alerting the CID officers to swiftly intervene at immigration counters. This proactive approach aims to apprehend criminals before they can leave the country.

Public Security Minister Tiran Alles and other high-ranking officials of Sri Lanka Police participated in the launch of this groundbreaking system.
