Colombo Dockyard lays keel of the third eco bulk carrier for Norway firm

Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDPLC) earlier this week laid the keel to auspiciously commence shipbuilding work on the third eco bulk carrier for Misje Eco Bulk AS, Norway. 

This keel laying marked the commencement of hull construction work of the eco bulk carrier and this momentous occasion was graced and witnessed by Misje Chairman Roald Misje, Misje Managing Director Nils Magne Fjereide, and Misje Chief Financial Officer Alina Printseva, Owner Representative/ Site Manager Thusitha Herath, CDPLC Surveyor of Class DNV GL Saman Kumarasinghe, CDPLC Chairman H. Tanaka, CDPLC MD/CEO D.V. Abeysinghe, CDPLC Technical Adviser/ Alternate Director I. Kuwaoka, CDPLC Chief Operating Officer Thimira Godakumbura, CDPLC Chief Commercial Officer Benny Fernando, and a host of other Senior Management and Staff representing CDPLC participated at this occasion.

This is the third vessel of a series, and this 89.95 m long vessel is designed to hold a cargo capacity of 5000 deadweight tonnage (DW). The type of cargo it could carry includes bulk cargo, grain, timber, unit loads, and containers. 

The vessel is powered by four-stroke diesel engines with an electric hybrid system supplying additional power through a battery system. These vessels are developed as eco-friendly vessels, as they have lower emissions compared to a conventional bulk carrier of the same size.

This project illustrates CDPLC’s reputation in the European market with the brand “Built-in Sri Lanka blending Sri Lankan technology with Japanese quality” receiving high recognition and acceptance in the European market.

CDPLC operates in joint collaboration with Onomichi Dockyard Company Ltd. of Japan and Sri Lankan Government institutions have a 35% shareholding at Colombo Dockyard. CDPLC is the frontrunner of Sri Lankan industrialisation and is one of the main contributors to the Government’s National Export Strategy from the shipbuilding sector.
