In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, the Government has announced plans to expedite the transformation of the Port of Colombo into a ‘Green Port’ by 2025.

This initiative aligns with global trends as major ports worldwide adopt green port practices.

The Chinese Government, recognised as a global economic powerhouse, has shown a keen interest in supporting this initiative by providing the necessary technology for the green transformation of the Port of Colombo.

A delegation led by China’s Shanghai Urban Transport Commission Deputy Director General Wang Xiao Jie, , engaged in discussions with Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and other key officials last week.

During these discussions, both parties explored ways to overcome trade and shipping obstacles between Sri Lanka and China.

They also agreed to enhance the utilisation of the Port of Colombo for trans-shipment activities, including TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) and other cargo.

Minister De Silva expressed his appreciation for the continued support from the Chinese Government towards Sri Lanka’s development initiatives, particularly in the maritime and aviation sectors.  He highlighted the strategic importance of the Port of Colombo in boosting the country’s trade capabilities and economic growth.

The meeting was also attended by Ports, Shipping and Aviation Ministry Secretary K.D.S. Ruwanchandra and several officials from the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).
