The Cabinet of Ministers approved to declare 21 March as ‘National Seafarers’ Day’, appreciating the contribution made by seafarers to the local economy and the maritime industry. The observance of National Seafarers’ Day is expected to promote the maritime sector as a lucrative career option and attract talent to the industry.
It will create opportunities to earn foreign exchange by attracting those interested in the maritime profession and enhance contribution to the national economy by improving the services of the maritime sector.
The proposal submitted by the Ports, Shipping and Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva received approval at the Cabinet meeting last week.
