Nautical Institute, UK recognises officers excelling in naval studies

The Sri Lanka Branch of the Nautical Institute recently honoured the academic excellence of Sri Lanka Navy officers and officers from merchant marine field in a ceremony held at Wave n’ Lake Navy Hall, Welisara. 

The certificate and award presentation took place, with Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and Merchant Shipping Director General Ajith Wijesinghe presiding over the ceremony.

In 2017, the Sri Lanka Branch of the Nautical Institute began presenting certificates and awards to officers of the Sri Lanka Navy and officers from merchant marine field in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements during courses conducted by respective institutes.

At the award ceremony five officers both from the Sri Lanka Navy and merchant marine field received certificates and awards for the academic year of 2023-24. 

R.A.D.N. Rajapaksha (Master Category), A.P.P. Rajakaruna (Chief Officer Category) and D.M.A.W. Dassanayake (Officer in charge of a Navigation watch Category), from the merchant marine field, received awards from the Commander of the Navy. Similarly, Lieutenant Commander Lahiru Sampath and Lieutenant Commander Sadeera Perera were recognised for their outstanding performances in Long Communication and Long Gunnery courses, conducted at the Naval and Maritime Academy, Trincomalee, with awards presented by Merchant Shipping Director General. All five officers received certificates from Sri Lanka Branch of the Nautical Institute Chairman Rear Admiral Ravindra Tissera. Further, the officers also received the membership of the Nautical Institute on this occasion.

Former Navy Commanders Admiral Cecil Tissera (Retd.) and Admiral Daya Sandagiri (Retd.) as well as Commander Northwestern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Nalindra Jayasinghe, Director Naval Training, Commodore Buddhika Jayaweera and a group of members from the Sri Lanka Branch of the Nautical Institute were also present on this occasion.
