The Sri Lanka Association of Vessel Operators (SLAVO) held its 26th Annual General Meeting recently at Courtyard by Marriot . At the helm for the fifth consecutive year, Shamal Perera, representing MSC, was re-elected as Chairman of SLAVO.
His charismatic leadership has undoubtedly contributed to the association’s continued success. Joining him in the leadership roles were Arjuna Hettiarachchi from X-Press Feeders, who was re-elected as Vice Chairman, and Gemunu Rodrigo from BTL, who retained his position as Honorary Treasurer. The committee members, Marius Gomez from Unifeeder and Biju Ravi from Maersk, added their expertise and commitment to ensure the smooth sailing of SLAVO. Together, this team of dedicated professionals is ready to steer SLAVO towards excellence and innovation in the maritime industry.
Shamal Perera, warmly welcomed the guests to the intimate gathering. He expressed his pride and excitement as he made a special announcement, the launch of SLAVO’s inaugural magazine that evening. He emphasised the need for an uplift in efficiency, navigation, port productivity and connectivity at the Port of Colombo.
SLAVO’s decision to start a magazine reflects their commitment to fostering a sense of community and sharing insights within the maritime industry. The magazine promises to be a window into the world of vessel operators, shedding light on their challenges and innovations. “SLAVO is at the forefront of making this change happen. Our vision aligns with the broader goals of the maritime industry and the country” he said. Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Keith D. Bernard echoed these sentiments. He highlighted the importance of improving the Port of Colombo’s competitiveness, connectivity, customer-centric solutions, enhancing facilities and infrastructure, including logistics and value additions. The world of maritime trade is highly competitive, SLAVO and SLPA are committed to raising Sri Lanka’s profile in this arena.
One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the first copy of the SLAVO Magazine, a publication dedicated to the maritime industry. Minister for Ports, Shipping and Aviation, Nimal Siripala de Silva, received the magazine, highlighting the importance of this publication in disseminating knowledge and industry insights. Moreover, the magazine will also be available online as an e-magazine, ensuring a wide reach.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva commended the works of SLAVO during his speech. He emphasised that SLAVO plays a crucial role in the maritime industry by bringing all associations together and efficiently approaching industry challenges. He expressed his confidence in SLAVO’s ability to work tirelessly to bring Sri Lanka’s ports to a reputable state. Furthermore, he stressed the global shift towards a green environment and encouraged investments in green hydrogen and ammonia plants at Sri Lankan ports. Minister also highlighted the importance of developing the next generation of professional and competitive talents, as this would lead to innovative methods in administration, revenue generation and economic development.
Following the vote of thanks by Arjuna Hettiarachchi, a fellowship event brought together industry dignitaries. SLAVO’s annual meeting was a testament to the maritime industry’s commitment to transformation and progress. With dynamic leadership, a vision for a competitive Port of Colombo, and a commitment to a green future, SLAVO and its stakeholders are paving the way for a brighter future in Sri Lanka’s maritime sector. This event was not just a meeting; it was a promise for a more efficient, connected and sustainable maritime future.
