The Sri Lanka Logistics and Freight Forwarders Association (SLFFA), as the leading representative body for the logistics and freight forwarding community in Sri Lanka, wishes to address the ongoing congestion at the Colombo Port. This pressing issue has persisted for several weeks and is critically affecting our nation’s logistics industry and the import/export trade, leading to a negative perception not only in our region but also across the international supply chain.

In light of the significant economic challenges our nation is currently facing, it is crucial that we unite as stakeholders, government authorities, industry representatives, and service providers to tackle this situation collaboratively and without further delay.

The need for process improvements and digitalisation

SLFFA has been actively engaged in discussions with the President and the Ministry of Highways, Ports and Aviation. We have submitted comprehensive proposals both individually and in partnership with other trade bodies. As we navigate this crisis, it is clear that our current operational processes require improvement. Embracing digitalisation, implementing a coordinated “single window” system, and leveraging technology are crucial steps needed to enhance our operational efficiencies.

The logistics industry must transition into a more streamlined and responsive framework. By adopting digital solutions and process improvements, we can reduce delays, improve transparency, and facilitate faster and more efficient movement of goods. These changes are essential not only to alleviate current congestion but also to prepare our port and logistics systems for future challenges.

Addressing unfounded blame

We are particularly concerned about the accusation levied against our member organisation Expolanka Freight, bringing discredit despite them taking the local brand global. It is vital to remember the contributions made by companies and individuals that have elevated Sri Lanka’s profile on the global stage, fostered international partnerships, and provided necessary revenue for our economy. We strongly urge the authorities to carry out an impartial and expeditious investigation into the allegations levelled, which will ensure the public of its right to factual and correct information. Also, it’s essential that we enable technology to address these concerns to prevent future such occurrences.

A call for collective action

As the apex industry body, SLFFA urges all stakeholders to come together with a shared vision and determination to find practical and swift solutions to overcome this crisis. The efficiencies in our logistics system affect all sectors of the supply chain and have far-reaching implications for our nation’s economic growth.

While we appreciate the commitment shown by the President and the Ministry of Highways, Ports and Aviation, we reiterate our call for an all-hands-on-deck approach. By harnessing the power of process improvements, digitalisation, and technology, we can enhance our operational capabilities and restore our standing in the eyes of the international trading community.

SLFFA remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure that we not only address the current congestion at Colombo Port, but also implement sustainable solutions that will bolster our logistics industry for years to come. Together, we can navigate this challenge and pave the way for a stronger, more resilient economy.
