In a significant stride towards advancing Sri Lanka’s imports and exports, the Sri Lanka Shippers’ Council (SLSC) recently joined forces with the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) in a strategic meeting.
The objective was to tackle critical issues within the industry and elevating it to new heights.
The SLSC Chairman, Sean Van Dort and the SLPA Chairman, Keith D. Bernard graced the meeting that brought together key stakeholders from both organisations. Among the key areas of discussion were assessments of the current status of digitalisation, single window system, and the Ports Community System (PCS).
A notable outcome of the meeting was the SLSC’s proposal to reinstate monthly meetings, with a view to provide a platform for direct issue resolution, fostering continuous dialogue that would be instrumental in enhancing the industry. Chairman Bernard endorsed the suggestion, recognising its potential to minimise challenges.
Emphasising the critical need for an improved digital infrastructure, the SLSC underscored the significance of increased digitalisation and the importance of the Ports Community System. The logistics cost identified as considerably high in Sri Lanka, became a focal point of discussion. The SLSC stressed the importance of mutual understanding between the private sector and government agencies, emphasising its role in propelling the nation forward.
The meeting is testament to a promising step forward in fortifying Sri Lanka’s trade sector. By fostering collaboration and addressing critical challenges, the industry aims to thrive in an ever-competitive global market. This joint effort reflects a commitment to a shared vision of progress, ensuring that Sri Lanka’s shipping industry remains robust and resilient in the face of evolving demands.
