Sri Lanka is set to be the stage for the first-ever YoungShip Global Leadership Summit (YGLS), scheduled to take place from 16 to 19 November in Colombo and Galle.
The event aims to cultivate the next generation of maritime industry leaders through interactive discussions, practical workshops, and comprehensive training programs.
The event is backed by prominent industry players, with Meridian Maritime Services as the Platinum sponsor, Advantis Ltd. and McLarens Group as co-sponsors, and PIL and 12 other partners, including Helanka Vacations by MendisOne. The Sri Lanka Association of Shipping Agents and WISTA Sri Lanka are key partner associations. SAGT Port of Colombo serves as the lanyard sponsor.
YoungShip International President Keshia Janssens emphasised the summit’s mission: “The YGLS aims to unite our chapter leaders globally to inspire, learn, and grow together, both as an organisation and individuals.”
YoungShip Sri Lanka Chairperson Maleena Awn highlighted the significance of hosting this event: “This summit marks a milestone for Sri Lanka, showcasing our cultural heritage and promoting international collaboration.”
The decision to host the inaugural YGLS in Sri Lanka was inspired by the country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean and its rich maritime heritage. YoungShip Sri Lanka, being a vibrant and active department, was awarded the opportunity to host this first summit, aligning with their mission to create a platform for knowledge exchange, innovation, and collaboration. The YGLS 2024 will feature a series of keynotes, panel discussions, and networking opportunities, with a strong focus on innovation, sustainability, and global collaboration in the maritime industry. Attendees from over 25 countries will explore Sri Lanka’s rich landscapes and cultural heritage while engaging in meaningful exchanges that will shape the future of maritime leadership.
The event’s theme, “Mystical Art and Craft”, celebrates Sri Lanka’s diverse cultural traditions, including the famous 18th-century devil masks and the Kolam dance. This unique focus on heritage will enhance the international dialogue on sustainable practices within the maritime sector.
According to the UNCTAD Review of Maritime Transport 2023, the global maritime industry has seen a 3.5% annual growth, highlighting the need for innovative leadership to sustain this trend. With maritime shipping responsible for nearly 2.5% of global CO2 emissions, the summit’s emphasis on sustainability is timely. Discussions will explore cutting-edge technologies like green fuels and energy-efficient vessels.
Meridian Maritime Services Ltd. Managing Director Majid Awn stated: “This summit is an invaluable initiative that fosters learning, networking, and growth for the next generation of maritime leaders.” Hayleys Advantis Ltd. Managing Director Ruwan Waidyaratne added: “By involving young professionals in this crucial sector, we ensure the future of shipping is in capable and informed hands.”
McLarens Holdings Ltd. Group Managing Director Shehara De Silva emphasised the event’s objectives: “Empowering young leaders, promoting innovation, and enhancing sustainability are critical to the advancement of our industry.”
The summit will feature speakers from Asia, Europe, and the Americas, bringing diverse perspectives on global maritime challenges and opportunities. This global representation underscores the event’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and shared learning.
