In support of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA), the Colombo Plan will conduct essential training focused on port cybersecurity and the development of a strategic policy to address current and future challenges of the cyber space. This program, backed by the U.S. Embassy in Colombo, along with the U.S. State Department will be conducted under the Maritime Advisory Program (MAP).
As a vital transshipment hub, SLPA is actively upgrading its physical infrastructure. However, the Chairman and senior management has recognised the urgent need to enhance the port’s cybersecurity measures to meet modern digital requirements. This training will be conducted by Experion Global of Netherlands, with two specialists arriving in Colombo to train 40 SLPA members. This initiative marks the beginning of a new capacity-building effort in cybersecurity, aimed at strengthening the port’s competitive edge and sending a clear message to clients that the SLPA is committed to advancing beyond physical infrastructure to protect and serve its global clientele.
By the end of the two-day workshop, participants will have gained valuable skills in several critical areas of cybersecurity. They will develop a heightened awareness of cyber threats and best practices, equipping them to better protect sensitive information. Staff will also acquire practical incident response skills, enabling them to minimise damage and downtime in the event of a cyber-incident. The workshop will foster a culture of collaboration and security awareness, encouraging attendees to share experiences and knowledge. Additionally, this training will help the Port Authority to ensure compliance with national and international cybersecurity regulations. Overall, the workshop will significantly enhance the SLPA’s resilience to cyber threats, strengthening its operational security.
Over the next two years, the Colombo Plan’s Maritime Advisory program (MAP) will continue to support the Sri Lankan port sector in staff up skilling and modernisation efforts, with ongoing assistance from the United States said its lead consultant for the project Rohan Masakorala.
