Tilak Dissanayake, Engineer, and Anil Kumar, Principal Surveyor and Area Business Development Manager – South Asia of Lloyd’s Register Asia are scheduled to address the 2017 International Conference of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) to be held on 3 October at the Balmoral Hall of the Kingsbury Hotel, Colombo. The theme for the conference is ‘The age of disruption – a reality check on Logistics and Transport’.
This annual symposium is the showcase event for the logistics and transport industry that will feature a power-packed lineup of distinguished guest speakers and panel of industry experts who will dissect the current disruption trends and share their views on what the future has in store for the sector.
With nearly four decades of industry experience as a Product Design Engineer, Tilak Dissanayake as had tenures in global corporates such as Boeing (12 years), Xerox (7 years), and various startups (6 years) during the Internet boom years in Silicon Valley. He has a BSc and an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawaii, USA. After 30 years living in the United States, he now resides in Sri Lanka and is engaged in a variety of ventures including designing a fully robotic air cargo network for “middle mile” courier package transport. He is an advocate for making Sri Lanka a better place, and delivered a TEDxColombo 2015 talk on “Reimagining our Economy” which champions Product Design Engineering as a means to get out of the Middle Income Trap. His persistent advocacy has borne fruit, and the Government recently approved a Cabinet Paper for a “Mechatronics enabled Economic Development Initiative” (MEDI) under which a long-term loan facility will be set up to fund product design engineering companies in the future. He is passionate about unleashing the potential of Sri Lankan youth, and volunteers his time for various efforts including the Vega Electric Supercar Project, and the Civil Aviation Authority’s District Aviation Awareness Program.
Anil Kumar is in charge of South Asia Business Development for Lloyd’s Register Marine and Offshore, focusing on technology innovation and providing core classification and consultancy services to shipyards, ship owner and navies in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Philippines, based in Chennai. Prior to his current role, he was Principal Surveyor and Marine Operations Manager in charge of Lloyd’s Register’s business and operation in East Coast India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He was tasked with the role of Lloyd’s Register’s Operation Manager for Sri Lanka and Maldives for five years based in Colombo. He has been in the Marine industry for over 28 years in various capacities rising from Professional Naval Architect to Classification Society Surveyor and Regional in charge. Upon graduation, he worked at Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd., where he was involved in design and construction of oceangoing commercial and naval vessels. He is a trainer and conducts marine and management systems training, public courses as well as in-house courses within Lloyd’s Register. Apart from practice building, he has a track record of developing and training new surveyors. While working with Lloyd’s Register, he has completed Lloyd’s Register Management Development Program at the European Business School, UK. Anil is an active member of various professional institutions such as IMarEST and RINA.
