  • CSCL takes delivery of biggest ever 19,000 TEU ship
  • To resume servicing the fast growing Indian subcontinent early next year
Last week, China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL) took delivery of the biggest container ship ever constructed. CSCL Globe is 400 m in length and can carry 19,000 twenty-foot equivalent units. This is one of the five ultra large ships on order for CSCL. This mammoth vessel will be deployed in CSCL’s service from Far East to Europe. A delegation from Ceyline Group, the agents for CSCL in Sri Lanka visited their head office in Shanghai last week in an effort to reactivate CSCL business in Colombo. This high level delegation included Ceyline Group Chairman Hemantha Jayanetti, Group Managing Director Captain Ajith Peiris and Group Business Development Manager Mevan Peiris.                 After a successful round of discussions, a strong indication was given by CSCL senior officials who include the General Manager for Asia-Pacific Lines Division Jim Qian and Deputy General Manager for Asia-Pacific Lines Division Chen Zhi Qing, that they would resume servicing the fast growing Indian subcontinent early next year. Ceyline officials also highlighted the new CICT Terminal, the only deep-water terminal in South Asia where CSCL’s ultra large vessels will be able to call, thereby making Colombo the best option for their strategic positioning in this region. CSCL General Manager Sui Jun stated that “CSCL has no doubt about the importance of establishing its business in Colombo, especially due to Sri Lanka’s strategic location and the country’s close friendship with the Peoples Republic of China.” “The time factor however will be determined by our business activity in India,” he further stated. Ceyline will be working closely with the CSCL regional office in Dubai and CSCL Indian agents to reactivate CSCL’s presence in the Indian subcontinent.
