Civil Aviation Authority seminar on aviation medicine from 17 Nov.

The Aeromedical Centre of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka is the institution authorised by the Director General of Civil Aviation to carry out medical assessments for pilots, air traffic controllers and other related civil aviation staff. 

This medical centre is manned by a senior civil aviation inspector – aviation medicine, a medical assessor, a nursing officer and a panel of designated civil aviation medical examiners operating under the head of section of personnel licensing and education. At the same time the Aeromedical Centre seeks assistance from designated consultants in several branches of medicine for clients who require specialised assessments in the relevant field.

As a part of the CAASL, the Aeromedical Centre is bound by the rules and regulations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and maintains the organisation’s expected standards. It is a prerequisite to keep designated consultants and civil aviation medical examiners updated on ICAO requirements, rules and regulations and the latest developments in the field of aviation medicine and other fields of medicine. To accomplish the ICAO requirements and maintain the highest standards in medical assessments of the Aeromedical Centre, a three-day seminar is being organised by the Civil Aviation Authority from 17-19 November at the Ramada Hotel for all civil aviation medical examiners and designated consultants. 

There will be intense training sessions throughout all three days covering the ICAO guidance documents, basic safety management principles, a state safety program, basic safety management principles to the medical assessment process and the main medical fields such as cardiology, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, endocrinology and especially occupational psychiatry/psychology. The whole afternoon session of the last day of the seminar will be allocated to pilots at a Management and Operational Level at SriLankan Airlines and Mihin Lanka and there will be interactive sessions on Mental and Behavioural disorders in pilots who work in a stressful work environment. The Civil Aviation Authority has invited one of the top specialists in the aviation medicine field, Dr. Jarnail Singh, for these sessions.

This seminar is coordinated and organised by Dr. Bimal Dias, Senior Civil Aviation Inspector-Aviation Medicine, with the help of the CAASL Special Project Unit under the leadership of Susantha de Silva, Head of Division/Flight Safety and with the blessings of Ananda Wimalasena, Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka and H.M.C. Nilmalsiri, Director General of Civil Aviation and Chief Executive Officer, Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka.
