Discussion on ‘Marine safety and minimising oil spill damage’

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) in association with the Marine Environmental Protection Authority (MEPA) will organise a discussion on ‘Marine Safety and Minimising Oil Spill Damage’ on 5 March 2014.
The objective of this discussion is to create awareness amongst participants on the importance of having access to quick response oil spill equipment. The discussion is targeted at highlighting the important issues related to the consequences of our nation targeting a Naval Hub position. Increased maritime activity will call for better safety at sea, which is tied up to the assessment of marine pollution and the prevention of oil spills associated with it. The discussion is aimed at strategic decision makers in the public and private sector and will provide speakers who will address issues which ought to be closer examined in order to minimise the risk of marine pollution associated with the strategic target.
Topics to be discussed will be on identifying the relevant equipment in order to minimise the risk to an acceptable level and, how critical the time factor is to limit the worst effect of oil spill and training exercises to minimise the same.
Keynote speech will be delivered by Erik Mathiesen, Partner in Expandi AS, Norway on ‘Maritime Risk Management Related to Oil Spills’ followed by a panel discussion. The panellists include Erik Mathiesen, A. Kariyawasam, General Manager, Marine Environmental Protection Authority, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, Commander of the Navy, Rear Admiral Ravindra C.
