The Institute of Shipping & Logistics has announced a unique training course titled ‘Diploma in Cargo Claims Management in International Maritime Trade’. The institute has identified that the area of cargo claims and carrier liability for loss and or damage of cargo via all modes of transportation is not given due attention or the importance it deserves until or unless a shipper’s or consignee’s cargo suffers a loss or damage in transit. It is a known fact that losses resulting from cargo greatly affect the bottom line of any business organisation and consequently their marketing personnel have to work several times harder in order to bring in new business to compensate for the losses accrued from unrecovered cargo claims. ‘Who pays if the ship sinks or the warehouse catches fire?’ and ‘What will happen if the ship is arrested or detained?’ are frequently asked questions. Candidates who enrol for the course will acquire all this knowledge. Those who successfully complete the course will increase their professional competency in this specific area of shipping and business logistics. This course is of six months duration and is scheduled to commence at the end of June 2014. Lectures will be held on Sunday mornings at the Ladies College Dept. of Vocational Studies, Colombo 3. The course is especially aimed at importers, exporters, shipping agents, freight forwarders, clearing agents, insurance companies and brokers, cargo surveyors, container depot operators, port employees, bankers and the business community. The objective of this course is to explain the very basic and pragmatic details that all persons involved with the shipping industry, insurance claims professionals and businessmen must know in order to pursue their trade effectively, said Institute of Shipping & Logistics CEO/MD Gihan Warusavitarne. The course consists of around 22 modules where the core modules will include:
  •  Introduction to marine insurance
  • Types of marine cargo cover
  • Carrier liability for loss and/or damage via all modes of transportation
  • Liability insurance for the freight forwarder
  • Contracts of carriage (truck, rail, air, ocean and parcel express) and international treaties
  • General average: An overview
  • Claims preparation, filing and recovery
  • Legal aspects of shipping
  • Liner shipping and containerisation
  • Dangerous cargo handling
  • Types of bills of lading
  • Glossary of shipping terms and INCOTERMS
  • The role of protective and indemnity (P&I) clubs
  • Legal recourses available to both shippers and consignees
The institute also conducts its popular six-month ‘flagship’ training courses, the Foundation Diploma in Shipping & Logistics and the Certificate in Logistics Services, Freight Forwarding, Multi Modal Transport. The latter is approved by the Director General of Merchant Shipping of the Ministry of Ports and Highways to satisfy the statutory licensing requirements of freight forwarders. The next intake is scheduled to commence on 8 June. The institute also undertakes customised in-house training programs in shipping, logistics and international trade for corporate clients and can be contacted via 0777891767 and e mail [email protected].
