Increasing productivity and lowering operational costs are a key factor in growing Sri Lanka’s logistics industry. The global logistics industry was estimated at a mammoth $ 4 trillion or 10% of the global GDP in 2014. The Indian subcontinent alone is estimated to be over $ 200 billion.

Sri Lanka logistics companies have made significant inroads into some of these markets, but to compete effectively, productivity improvement has to be seen as an ongoing process. In view of this, two of Sri Lanka’s leading logistics service providers, Logistics International Ltd. (LIL) and Green Lanka Container Yard commissioned Kalmar Container Handling Equipment in their premises.

Logistics International, a subsidiary of the Hayleys Advantis Group, commissioned a second Kalmar Double Stacker at its premises in Welisara. The double stacker is capable of handling two containers simultaneously and contributes to the overall productivity improvement of the facility. “We commissioned the first Kalmar Double Stacker in 2014 as part of our automation process and to improve efficiency as we were embarking on a phase of rapid growth,” LIL Ltd., Director Janitha Jayanetti said. “We want to build on that growth momentum and adding a second double stacker makes economic sense in terms of spare part stocks and maintenance. Kalmar has proven to be a reliable brand in the logistics industry and the local agent Macsa Ltd., long presence in the container handling industry gives them a better insight into the needs of the industry.”

Greenlanka Container Yard Ltd., took delivery of a new Kalmar Container Handler recently after having explored the market for a reliable container handling solution. “Green Lanka Container Yard already operates a Kalmar Container Handler for over 11 years and has not had any major repairs. Our business is growing rapidly and will consider adding a second new Kalmar Container handler in the near future,” Green Lanka Container Yard Assistant General Manager Harendra Sandarasagara said. Green Lanka Shipping is the sole agent for the Taiwan based Evergreen Line one of the most active shipping lines operating to the Port of Colombo.

In Sri Lanka Kalmar is represented and services by Macsa Ltd., a leading distributor and service agent which has operations in Sri Lanka and Maldives, of industrial grade products and services, including, Perkins Diesel Engines and Spares, Westin Power and Lega Diesel Generators, and Allison Transmissions. Perkins Diesel Engines caters to Industrial, Agricultural, Construction, Logistic and Marine sectors. Macsa counts over 50 years in the industry and is among a handful of companies in the industry that has qualified engineers on call to extend their best support to customers.

“Our core objective is to support the growth of the industrial, agricultural, construction, logistics and power sectors in Sri Lanka and the region. We are committed to working closely with our local partners in delivering on their goals for their businesses growth,” Macsa Ltd., Managing Director Saurabh Udeshi said. “We look forward to building our relationship with LIL Ltd., and Green Lanka Ltd., two stalwarts in Sri Lanka’s logistics industry.”

As a prominent manufacturer of global cargo handling equipment, the Kalmar state-of-the-art technology is capable of meeting the requirements of the increasing global clientele of leading logistic service providers.
