MarineTraffic, the world’s most trusted AIS vessel tracking service is supporting World Port Hackathon (WPH) for the second year running as a Co-Creator Partner.

World Port Hackathon 2016 will take place on 2-3 September at the Port of Rotterdam and promises to be bigger and better than the successful 2015 event.

Focused on problem solving within the ports sector, more than 120 ‘hackers’ or coders will gather in teams to create technological solutions and improvements to meet the port industry’s needs.

Experts from the Port of Rotterdam and other partner ports including the Port of Singapore will be on hand to explain and advise on the real-life contexts of the problems and challenges presented.

Challenges this year will centre around three themes: Infrastructure and Logistics; Energy and Climate and Disrupt the Port.

The Hackathon revolves mainly around open data, big data and technology and a wide range of datasets provided by different stakeholders will be available for the teams to utilise. APIs from MarineTraffic will be prominent among these.

Argyris Stasinakis, partner at MarineTraffic said: “We are delighted to be a Co-Creator Partner of World Port Hackathon again this year. The talents on show and solutions created at last year’s event were extremely impressive. It is very good to be able to share our A PIs with the teams. With 3000 active AIS stations around the world – many based in major ports – and 520,000,000 vessel positions recorded each day, we are in a strong position to supply data that the Hackathon teams can integrate into their projects.

More than half the teams and all the winners competing in last year’s Hackathon leveraged our APIs to live stream vessel information for both testing and solution creation purposes. We hope to see an even greater number tap into our APIs this year and look forward to seeing the results.”

Léon Gommans, founder and director of Wold Port Hackathon said: “We are very pleased to have Co-Creator Partners of such high calibre with real assets to bring to the table. Having MarineTr affic’s high quality AIS data and API’s enables the teams to innovate fast. It provides a solid base of live vessel information for tech prototypes and concepts. Ultimately these products will work in ports all around the world.”
