The German parent company was founded in 1917 while the Sri Lankan operation dates back to 1981. Each of the Group’s ships is registered in Sri Lanka and employs a totally Sri Lankan crew. With quality Sri Lankan crews in high demand all over the world, the Mercmarine Group has also established the Mercantile Seamen Training Institute (Mercmarine Training) in order to train local youth in the necessary skill sets, including in Officer and Ratings grades, as well as Port Manpower. The Group has obtained the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System Certification, a testament to the rigorous processes set in place to ensure excellence. The Group’s Institute has also won the Lloyd’s List Salute to Maritime Excellence Award for Training Commitment, as well as the prestigious Sea trade – Colombo Award for Best Training Facility- 2012 and 2013, further reflection of the quality of its graduates.
