The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) extended an opportunity to the public to visit the newly opened Colombo Port Expansion Project (CPEP) from 8 to 13 August 2013 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Following instructions given by President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the Minister of Port and Highways (Projects) Rohitha Abeygunawardena, SLPA Chairman Dr.Priyath B. Wickrama carried out necessary instructions accordingly to facilitate this opportunity to the public.
By Sunday, 11 August 2013, the site had been visited by more than 2.5 million people from around the country. Due to the huge interest expressed by the public in this regard and to ease long queues, people were also allowed to just walk into the site and along the breakwater, giving them a firsthand experience to witness one of the world’s major deep draft container ports.
People have also been allowed to use their own mode of transport or use the shuttle service provided free of charge by SLPA to visit CPEP. The public has been requested to enter the site from Gate 1A, from SLPA’s Chaithya Road entrance.
The Colombo Port Expansion Project, with its new breakwater, control tower and the first terminal, namely the Colombo International Container Terminal (CICT), was ceremonially opened on 5 August 2013 by the initiative of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
