SriLankan Aviation College launches Colombo Aviation Quiz 2016

SriLankan Aviation College (SLAC), the country’s premier aviation training institution, presents the first ever Colombo Aviation Quiz, in which teams from 21 schools will compete and demonstrate their knowledge of the global aviation industry 

Colombo Aviation Quiz 2016 is scheduled to be held on Saturday 5 November at Methodist College in Colombo 3, commencing at 8 a.m. with the awards ceremony scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. 

The objective of the quiz is to enhance knowledge among the younger generation on aviation and create awareness of the rewarding career possibilities in air transport which is one of fastest growing industries in the world. The quiz is part of the sustained program of activities by SLAC, the training arm of national carrier SriLankan Airlines, to spread the aviation awareness throughout Sri Lanka Being an active partner of ICAO Next generation aviation professionals programme (ICAO-NGAP), SLAC is involved in many aviation awareness activities for next generation and outreaches of Sri Lanka and south Asian region . 

The quiz is open to Aviation Clubs of schools in the Colombo District, whose members are interested in the aviation industry. Each team will have five members and the performance of teams will be evaluated by a team of judges from SLAC. SLAC is planning to have this quiz as an annual event open island wide within next few years.

SLAC will distribute prices with total worth of Rs. 300,000 among the teams in the grand quizzing event. The winning team will receive a special shield, certificates and sponsorship worth Rs. 100,000 for any school aviation event. The runner-up team will receive aviation camps for all students, a trophy, certificates and souvenirs. Team hold the third place will also receive aviation camps and exiting aviation gift packs from the college.  All participating teams will receive special certificates and souvenirs appreciating their participation and two slots at SLAC’s Aviation Education Camps for each school all school participants will receive special simulations sessions at SriLankan Training SIM centre. Making the event more colourful participants will also get gift packs for answering spot questions.

SLAC (www.srilankanaviationcollege.com) was launched in 2013 bringing together more than three decades of experience of the National Carrier in all aspects of aviation training. Located at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, it provides a wide range of programs through its six faculties – Travel and Tourism; Airport Services; Cargo and Dangerous Goods Regulations; Image Consultancy; Aircraft Maintenance Avionics; and Aircraft Maintenance Mechanicals. It graduated nearly 300 young men and women in various programmes this year.

It gained global recognition last year when it was granted associate membership in the prestigious TRAINAIR PLUS programme of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO). It is already accredited by international bodies such as IATA, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), and the Civil Aviation Authorities of Sri Lanka, Maldives, Nepal and Pakistan. SLAC presently operates a franchise in the Maldives and has appointed Nawaloka Air Services as its franchise partner in the Northern, Southern, Eastern and Central Provinces.
