The Green Team of SriLankan Airlines marks World Environment Day with special emphasis on reducing the effects of global warming
SriLankan Airlines, the national carrier of Sri Lanka marks the World Environment Day today (5 June) at the In-flight Auditorium, Airline Centre, Katunayake with a day-long line up of green events. Working under the theme, ‘Raise your voice, not the sea level’, the Green Team of SriLankan Airlines has organised many programs to raise awareness on environmental conservation among the employees.
The highlight of the day will be the launch of SriLankan Airlines Environmental Policies which focus on the Airline’s conservation efforts, energy-saving mechanisms, and partnerships with national and international organisations in its endeavour to reduce the carbon footprint. SriLankan Airlines’ Corporate Environment website will also be placed in the public domain on the same day, providing a comprehensive line up of information on the Airline’s green efforts.
To mark the World Environment day, SriLankan Green Team has also organised an art competition among children of the staff members – under two age categories. The children submitted their drawings under the themes: ‘Relationship between the sea and environment’ and ‘Rise of sea level and its impact on the environment’. The drawings that best depict the themes were selected by a panel of judges and the winners will be awarded certificates at the event. In keeping with this year’s theme, there will also be an awareness programme for children from nearby schools, on rising sea levels due to global warming. Conducted by Prof. Devaka Weerakoon, this is organised through the Airlines’ partnership with Business and Biodiversity Platform.
SriLankan Airlines last year marked the World Environment Day with the commissioning of its first in-house bio gas plant which currently fulfils the needs of the Airline Centre’s main cafeteria.
