Sunil G. Wijesinha had his education at S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia. He is a Chartered Engineer having qualified in Production Engineering and is a qualified Chartered Management Accountant. He has specialised in productivity having qualified through the Institute of Management Services, UK, and holds an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management.
Having had his first substantial post as the Industrial Engineer at the Sri Lanka Tyre Corporation he quickly rose to top management becoming one of the youngest to become the General Manager of the Ceylon Ceramics Corporation. He subsequently became Chairman of the Employees’ Trust Fund Board at the age of 39 once again becoming one of the youngest to be appointed as a Chairman of a Government Institution.
After a stint having his own consultancy firm, he was invited to take the helm at the Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka which was in distress at the time,and was able to completely turn it around. He recently retired after holding the post of Chairman and Managing Director at Dankotuwa Porcelain PLC which was transformed during his tenure from a relatively unknown company to become a world class organisation producing a high quality product and recognised as one of Sri Lanka’s top brands.
Sunil Wijesinha is well known for his pioneering efforts in introducing many Japanese management techniques to Sri Lanka and for his efforts at promoting concepts and techniques of productivity in Sri Lanka and the Asia Pacific Region. He was the first Sri Lankan to be awarded the “National Award” by the Asian Productivity Organisation (APO) for his productivity promotion activities in the country and the only Sri Lankan to be awarded the “Regional Award” by the APO for his productivity related efforts in the Asia Pacific Region.
Sunil Wijesinha has served on many Boards in the private and public sector, covering diverse fields such as milk processing, ship building, airlines, standards, plantations, consultancy, fund management, stock brokering, banking, leasing, coconut product processing, and co-operative policy making. He was a Director of SriLankan Airlines, the Deputy Chairman of Sampath Bank PLC until 2011, and was the founder President of the Sri Lanka Ceramics Council.
He has served in many business councils, Chambers, and advisory committees. Currently he is the Chairman of the Employers’ Federation of Ceylon, Chairman of DNH Financial (Pvt) Ltd, President of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Quality and Productivity, and serves on the Boards of Directors of Asiri Surgical PLC, Watawala Plantations PLC, Sampath Leasing Ltd, and DFCC Vardhana Bank Ltd.
