International Women’s Day is annually held on 8 March to celebrate women’s achievements throughout history and across nations. It is also known as the United Nations (UN) Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. This March, The Kingsbury is urging the general public and in particular the staff at all offices to take a few minutes to identify an extraordinary woman either at work or in the community to say “Thank you” for their contribution and in doing so to encourage other women too to achieve such feats, hence the theme for this year – “Make it happen”. The Kingsbury is also ready to reward such women. All you would have to do is tell us about her on our Facebook page and a winner will be picked and gifted with a voucher for Caviar & Oyster Sunday Brunch for three persons and that’s not all, the nominator will also receive a voucher for High Tea for three persons. This is the time to uphold women’s achievements, recognise challenges, and focus greater attention on women’s rights and gender equality to mobilise all people to do their part. The Beijing Platform for Action focuses on 12 critical areas of concern, and envisions a world where each woman and girl can exercise her choices, such as participating in politics, getting an education, having an income, and living in societies free from violence and discrimination. Here in Sri Lanka, we are calling on all fathers, husbands, brothers, bosses, uncles, nephews and women themselves to take a look around your immediate environment; home, the work place and the community you live in to identify the difficulties women face in today’s society and start a dialogue with just one person, be it your family member, a colleague or a neighbour to discuss what positive change you and your group can bring about for our ‘Mother Lanka’,” said The Kingsbury Manager Corporate Communications and PR Dinithi Somaratne.
