Coinciding with the trice-blessed day marking the birth, attaining enlightenment and passing away of the Lord Buddha, the Sri Lankan Cultural Centre under the patronage of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Dubai organised on grand scale an Annual Vesak celebration/Festival of lights at the Shiekha Lathifa Ground in Dubai.
Ven. Tissamaharama Yodakandiya Nagamaha Viharadhipathi Mahawewa Mahinda thero, the Consul General Abdul Raheem and staff of the Consulate General of Sri Lanka along with foreign dignitaries inaugurated the Vesak celebration festivities.
The colourful and varied events with decoration of Vesak lanterns attracted more than 5,000 people to gather at the ground and to celebrate the most expected Sri Lankan festival in Dubai.
A traditional Vesak procession with colourful costumes was performed by the Sri Lankan children.
The Vesak devotional songs, cultural dances, drama (Jathaka Katha) staged by Sri Lankan children and their parents brought happy memories and peace of mind among the Sri Lankan expatriates in Dubai.
A number of Sri Lankan community organisations organised a ‘dansal’ for the expatriate Sri Lankans at the event. The celebration was enjoyed by all Sri Lankans and brought a true Sri Lankan festival atmosphere in Dubai.
