13 teams will battle for glory at Sri Lankasports.com Inter Company Netball Championships

Thirteen top teams will battle for glory at the Sri Lankasports.com Intercompany Netball Championships - organised by Sri Lanka’s first sports website, www.sri lankasports.com - which will be worked off on 21 January at the St. Joseph’s College Indoor Stadium in Colombo.DFT-22-5

The event will be held in two categories - female and mixed. Hatton National Bank, Seylan Bank, HSBC, Citizen Development Business Financial Plc, Commercial Credit, David Peiris Motor Company, Sri Lanka Telecom and MAS Active Shade line will battle for top honors in the female category while Seylan Bank, Citizen Development Business Financial Plc, Commercial Credit, David Peiris Motor Company and Standard Charted Bank will be playing for top honors in the mixed category.

The female category of the Sri Lankasports.com Intercompany Netball Championship will be played for the Cup, Plate and Bowl Championships while the mixed category will be played only for the Cup championship.

The Sri Lankasports.com Intercompany Netball Championship was inaugurated in 2006 and has been held for four consecutive years and reached the pinnacle of mercantile netball in Sri Lanka with its innovative concepts and approach. The Inter Company Netball Championship was launched in the country following requests of those from the country’s netball fraternity. 

At last year’s competition, Seylan Bank regained the Cup Championship by beating Hatton National Bank by 28 goals to 27 in a tense final. Expo Holdings won the plate championship by beating David Peiris Motor Company in the final by 23 goals to 6. Kanrich Finance took away the Bowl Championship beating Sri Lanka Telecom by 22 goals to 4.  In the mixed category Seylan Bank outclassed Nations Trust Bank in another thrilling encounter 14-11 to take the title.

The Sri Lankasports.com Intercompany Netball Championship has introduced a seven-a-side rugby format (play for Cup, Plate, Bowl and Shield in 7-1-7 minute match duration) to the game of netball in Sri Lanka at the inaugural Championship in 2006 and continued to add more features during the ensuing three years up to 2009. 

The introduction of the power play concept to the game of netball in Sri Lanka was also one of the new features introduced at the event. The Sri Lankasports.com Intercompany Netball Championship has also created history by becoming the first netball tournament to be held entirely in an indoor stadium when it was held at the Sri Lanka Youth Indoor Stadium in Maharagama and the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in 2007, 2008 and 2009.
