13th Zahira Super 16 Soccer Championship 15-21 Oct.

The Past Prefects’ Association of Zahira College Colombo will organise the ‘Zahira Super 16 Soccer Championship 2017’ from 15-21 October from 2.00 p.m. onwards at the Zahira college grounds and City League grounds in Colombo. 

The objective of the tournament is to ‘Add more values to youth football in Sri Lanka’. For the past 12 years this was a seven-a-side inter-school football tournament, but as Zahira College football celebrates 100 years, the organisers have transformed the format of the tournament into an 11-a-side tournament and it will also be played for seven days on a league basis which they believe will give more exposure to the football players. 

The tournament’s advisory committee will consist of officials who are experts in the local and foreign football arena and is approved by the Ministry of Education and recommended by the Sri Lanka Schools Football Association.

As a curtain-raiser and as the opening ceremony of the Zahira Super 16 Soccer Championship 2017, the Celebrity Football Match powered by Cool Planet, The Factory Outlet and Bolt-Gear will be held on Saturday, 7 October at the Zahira College grounds in Maradana at 3.30 p.m. between the All Stars and Cricket Stars. The Cricket Stars team will be led by past national cricketer Mahela Jayawardene and his teammates will include Graeme Labrooy, Chaminda Vaas, Romesh Kaluwitharana, Upul Chandana, Nuwan Zoysa and Isuru Udana. The All-Stars team will be led by popular singer Santhush Weeraman and will line up with popular personalities from various sectors such as rugby, soccer, business, art, media, etc. For tickets contact Shihan on 0770334458.

The cup winners will be given a cash prize of Rs. 50,000. Furthermore, this is the only soccer tournament in the country which offers such cash prizes and awards at the school level. The organisers announced that Cool Planet, which has always been supporting the Past Prefects Association of Zahira College, will be the main sponsor for this prestigious tournament.

The organising committee invites all soccer enthusiasts to come and feel the excitement of the Celebrity Football Match on Saturday, 7 October at the college grounds, Maradana at 3.30 p.m. and 13th Zahira Super 16 Soccer Championship 2017 on Sunday, 15 October to 21 October from 2.00 p.m. onwards at the Zahira College grounds and City League grounds, Colombo, one of the premier schools soccer tournaments in the country where future stars will show their prowess.
