Over 350 athletes will vie for honours at the much awaited 32nd National Rowing Championships on the waters of the Diyawanna Rowing Course.
The rowers will compete in over 26 events starting on 21 September and running for over three days at the Diyawanna Rowing Centre, a purpose built facility supported by the Ministry of Sports to propagate the sport of rowing.
In keeping with international standards, the races will be rowed over a distance of two kilometres and comprise four lanes. The event categories comprise both men’s and women’s Open, Over-18 and Under-18 events and will include singles, pairs, double sculls, coxless and coxed fours. The schoolboy sculler and schoolgirl sculler events will also be conducted. This year’s championship will have an exhibition eights race as well.
The winners of the Open category are considered national champions. The defending national champions in the Men’s Open category and the Women’s Open category, the Sri Lanka army rowing team, will be out to maintain their dominance on the water at this year’s edition of the championships.
Athletes from 17 institutions will compete in the events and represent the armed forces, leading universities and public, private and international schools.
This popular annual event on the rowing calendar is organised by the Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka, the national association for the sport.
