Melbourne, July 22(ANI): Former Australian captain Steve Waugh has claimed that 56 international cricketers had reported illegal approaches from bookmakers to the International Cricket Council (ICC) last year.

"Corruption is a big issue for the game and it's still out there. We can't brush it under the carpet," the Daily Mail quoted Waugh, as saying.

"I've only just found out that there have been 56 cases of players reporting approaches from bookmakers in the last year and we don't know how many have gone unreported. That suggests the bookies are very active," he added.

Waugh currently plays a pivotal role in attempting to eliminate illegal betting issues from cricket.

The 46-year-old had earlier suggested that lie-detector tests would be a good way to catch culprits and also serve as a deterrent.
