Australia will once again host the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast from 5-15 April.
The last time Australia hosted the games was in 2006 in Melbourne.
Sri Lanka will be represented at the competition by a contingent of 87 competitors from 13 sporting disciplines, according to Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekera. The Minister has stated that only a select set of officials will be permitted to attend the games. He added that already a committee headed by former national athletic coach and sports advisor Sunil Gunewardena has been appointed to select suitable officials to make the tour to the Gold Coast. The committee includes Susanthika Jayasinghe, Sajith Jayalal, Dr. Lakshman Edirisinghe, Daya Ratnayake and I.G. Wijeratne.
This year’s Commonwealth Games will hold 17 sporting disciplines including rugby Sevens. The other sports are athletics, weightlifting, wrestling, boxing, swimming, badminton, table tennis, squash, shooting, beach volleyball, cycling and gymnastics.
