Former Trinity, Kandy SC, CH & FC, and Sri Lanka centre Rohan Abeykoon will head the national rugby selectors for 2018/2019. The appointment was confirmed by Provincial Councils, Local Government and Sports Minister Faiszer Musthapha.
Others in his team will be former Antonian, CR & FC, Kandy SC, and Sri Lanka prop forward, L V Ekanayake; former Mahanama, Army, and Sri Lanka Centre, Kapila Knowlton; former Isipathana, Police, and Sri Lanka hooker, Leslie De Silva; and former Lumbini MV, Havies, and Sri Lanka sevens specialist, Nishantha Chanaka. Inclusion of L V Ekanayake and Leslie De Silva comes as a surprise package to all rugby fans in the country, as their involvement in the game in the recent past was not noticed. The first task of the national selection committee would be to select the Sri Lanka Under 20 sevens pool for the Asian Sevens 2018, which will take place in Hong Kong next month, while the Asian Games Men’s squad for Indonesia too will follow soon afterwards.
