All Island Sepak Takraw Championship in March 2020

The Kumpulan Melayu Kotikawatta (Kotikawatta Malay Association) will organise the All Island Sepak Takraw Championship on 22 March, at the T B Illangarathna Grounds, Mulleriyawa New Town. The Championship will involve more than 50 teams from around the island. 

Kumpulan Melayu Kotikawatta (KMK) is a community-based Malay organisation established in 2003, with the intention of promoting Malay culture, tradition and sports. KMK has taken a special interest in Sepak Takraw over the last few years, with many of its members selected for the national pool and two of them, including former President Nilam Hallaldeen and Rashard Doole, were selected to Sri Lanka’s national squad which represented the country in Thailand and Nepal in 2016 to 2019. Sepak Takraw is an acrobatic and exciting game whose origins can be traced back to the 11th century. It is a sport native to the Southeast Asian region that has also gained popularity in Sri Lanka recently. The sport is also known as Kick Volleyball, uses a rattan ball, and only allows players to use their feet, knees, chest, and head to touch the ball. The All Island Sepak Takraw Championship will commence at 07:00 am on 22 March, and will be conducted under four categories, namely, Men’s open, Junior, Women, and veterans. Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded for winners and runners up of each category. The day will also feature many entertainment items including bouncy castles, DJ music and food stalls. 

KMK invites all sports enthusiasts around the country to witness this exciting championship, and enjoy the entertainment provided for general public on this fun-filled day.
