The two faces of Angelo Mathews when he was dismissed for 99 (on left) and 199
Angelo Mathews, the former Sri Lankan captain and the most experienced player in the present Test side, established a rare batting record when he was dismissed for 199 in Sri Lanka’s first innings of the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh at Chattogram.
Mathews’ unwanted feat not only made him the 12th batsman to be dismissed on 199 in Test cricket, but also the only batsman to be dismissed for 99 in a Test match as well – against India at the Brabourne Stadium in 2009.
Mathews is the second Sri Lankan batsman to be dismissed for 199 in a Test after Sanath Jayasuriya against India at the SSC in 1997.
Another Sri Lankan cricketer Kumar Sangakkara was left stranded on 199* when he ran out of partners in the first Test against Pakistan at Galle in 2012.
Mathews has been dismissed in the nervous nineties in Tests on five occasions – 99 v India (2009), 95 v Australia (2011), 91 v Pakistan (2013), 91 v Pakistan (2014), and 91 v Pakistan (2014).
Mahela Jayawardene holds the record for the most number of dismissals in the 90s in Test cricket for Sri Lanka with six. The highest number by any batsman is 10 by Sachin Tendulkar of India. (ST)
