Sri Lanka Army SC and CCC have opened up a five-point gap between them and the third placed team Badureliya SC in Group B of the SLC Major Limited-Over Inter-Club tournament, the first round of which is nearing an end with three weekends of matches left to be played.
Both teams scored easy wins in their respective matches with Army SC defeating Panadura SC by 116 runs on D/L method, and CCC beating Kurunegala YCC by four wickets.
Powered by captain Thisara Perera’s knock of 56 off 46 balls (3 fours, 2 sixes) and Yashoda Mendis’ cameo innings of 37* off 16 balls (3 sixes, 3 fours) Army SC posted 252-8 off 45 overs. Panadura SC was bundled out for 137.
CCC captain Ashan Priyanjan starred in his team’s win against Kurunegala YCC taking 3 for 39 with his off breaks and following it up with 49 off 40 balls as they chased down a target of 166.
A keen tussle is taking place for the top two places in Group A with Ace Capital CC, defending champions Tamil Union, Moors SC and SSC all in the running for a semi-final spot.
Tamil Union joined group leaders Ace Capital CC and third placed Moors SC with 21 points each when they thrashed Badureliya SC by 198 runs. Former Sri Lanka spinner Dilruwan Perera ran through the Badureliya SC batting for 82 taking five wickets for eight runs off seven overs after Tamil Union had hit up an imposing 280-9.
Half-centuries from Lasith Croospulle and Teron Baskaran enabled Ace Capital CC to keep their noses ahead with a three-wicket win over Bloomfield. Moors SC also won with ease beating Saracens SC by 114 runs. Moors SC skipper Pabasara Waduge made a top score of 76 off 79 balls.
SSC kept pace with the three leaders by beating arch rivals NCC by six wickets which kept them stable at third place on 18 points. Medium-pacer Dilshan Abeysinghe took a career best 4 for 41 and Nipun Dananjaya (57* off 73 balls) and Chamindu Wickramasinghe (38* off 23 balls, 3 sixes, 3 fours) figured in a 57-run unbroken stand to see SSC home chasing 149.
Galle CC figured in a thrilling one-wicket over Negombo CC despite getting off to a bad start losing their first three batsmen for ducks to be 3-0 chasing 117. Ravindu Sembukuttige played an important innings of 40* off 89 balls to see Galle CC home.
Former Sri Lanka cricketer Sachithra Senanayake scored his second one-day century 114 off 102 balls (7 sixes, 9 fours) to steer Navy SC to a three-wicket win over last year’s finalist Ragama CC.
An opening partnership of 126 between Ravindu Ratnayake (82 off 71 balls, 6 sixes, 5 fours) and skipper Rajeewa Weerasinghe (64 off 92 balls, 4 sixes, 4 fours) enabled Lankan CC chase 182 and beat Kalutara TC by six wickets.
Colts scored back to back wins by defeating Police SC by 72 runs on Saturday and following it up with a 122-run win over Bloomfield where left-arm spinner Muditha Lakshan took his maiden five-wicket one-day haul. Kandy Customs CC beat Air Force SC by eight wickets and Chilaw Marians CC beat Nugegoda SWC by eight wickets in the other matches. (ST)
