Ashan Silva, driving a Mitsubishi Evo ix, set a new course record of 31.26 seconds for the Eliyakanda Hill Climb yesterday while on the previous day, Jaden Gunawardane clocked 33.63 seconds on two wheels to erase the 33.752 second mark set by Sangeeth Suriyage last year.

Ashan who has mastered the Eliyakanda track, smashed Dilan Senevirathne’s 2018 record of 32.422 seconds on his first run with a timing of 31.78 seconds and bettered it by clipping off 0.52 seconds in his second run. Ashan was the fastest at last year’s edition as well.

Speaking at the awards presentation, Ashan said that it takes a team effort to be able to establish new records and thanked his maintenance crew and all those who supported him to enter his name in the record books yesterday.

The motorcycle events of the SLT-Mobitel Southern Eliyakanda Hill Climb were worked off on Saturday. Jaden Gunawardane established a new course record clocking 33.63 seconds while Sangeeth Suriyage, the previous record holder, could only manage to clock 34.38 seconds to take second place in the Group SM Super Motard open event. Jaden won three events on Saturday.

It was unfortunate that Rajitha Uluwita who was in line to possibly achieve his best time lost control of his vehicle a few metres before the final bend and the finish line. Rajitha was lucky to escape with a few minor bruises but his vehicle was not that lucky.

There were two female competitors namely Kaushalya Ariyadasa and Shehara Jayawardena. Shehara was placed third in SLH cars up to 1618cc and Group S cars up to 1500cc events.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa, State Minister Kanchana Wijesekera and Matara District MP Nipuna Ranawaka were spectators at the morning’s action.
