Sixteen-year-old Reshan Algama and Chalitha Pushpika both narrowly missed out on the cut at the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship 2024 in Gotemba, Japan recently.

The youngsters were faced with challenging conditions, particularly on day two, which was interrupted by rain and resumed the following day (day three).

Reshan was well-positioned to make the cut, but finishing with a bogey-par-bogey sequence left him four-over for the day and nine-over overall, narrowly missing the cut by just two strokes.

Chalitha Pushpika faced a similar fate, also finishing nine-over.

Despite this setback, Reshan’s and Chalitha’s performance highlights their potential as they continue to grow through competing with some of the best amateurs in the region.

With 120 participants from 45 countries, the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship is a top-tier event that attracts the best amateur players in the world, making it a true test of skill and perseverance.

At the top of the leaderboard, Japan’s Rintaro Nakano leads the pack at eight-under, followed closely by Malaysia’s Rizq Adam Rohizam and China’s Wenyi Ding at six-under. Last year’s champion and Masters player Jasper Stubbs has struggled, currently sitting at three-over after a tough start to the tournament.

Though heavy rain prevented day three’s scheduled start, the remaining rounds promise to deliver a thrilling finish as Asia Pacific’s finest battle for the coveted title. (SJ)
