The national rugby selection committee named an initial pool of 20 players who will go into a bio-bubble after a PCR test at the Sugathadasa Stadium starting today (2 November).
As per the Ministry of Sports directive to Sri Lanka Rugby, only players who took part in the recently concluded Warriors Trophy sevens were considered for the selections process. This left out some outstanding players both from CR & FC and Kandy SC as both clubs kept away from the tournament.
Speaking to Daily FT, Sri Lanka Assistant Coach Nilfer Ibrahim said: “It’s tough work ahead with just two weeks left for the important tour and we will need to work hard to get the players in their correct positions. Selectors have named the squad according to their given criteria by SLR and Sports Ministry, and I am happy with the selections.
“We have to select from these group of players who were at the Warrior Rugby Sevens last weekend. It was good competition and it made the selections hard. However, I feel we are in a good place and the hard work needs to start now. It’s a great opportunity for the players to represent their country.”
Pool of 20 players: Ramith de Silva, Nuwan Perera, Ishara Madushan, Anjula Hettiarachchi (All from Sri Lanka Air Force), Suranga Kasun, Sachith Silva, Iroshan Silva, Vageesha Weerasinghe, (All from Sri Lanka Police), Sudharaka Dikkubura, Nalaka Maduranga, Lasantha Kumara (All from Sri Lanka Army), Adeesha Weeratunga, Kanchana Ramanayake, Chathura Senevirathne, Nishon Perera (All from Sri Lanka Navy), Samual Ogbebor, Hirantha Perera, Kushan Indunil, Reza Rafaideen and Janidu Dilshan (CH&FC).
