Asian Junior Athletics Championship 2018: Sri Lanka placed 5th

Sri Lanka’s junior athletes did the country proud by placing fifth overall out of the 35 countries at the Asian Junior Championship 2018 which took place in Gifu, Japan last week.

Aruna Dharshana stamped his class with a Gold Medal for Sri Lanka. In the 3000 metres steeplechase, Maristela Wasanthi won Gold. This was followed by the 4 X 400-metre relay team, with team members Pabasara Niku, Pasindu Kodikara, Ravishka Indrajith and Aruna Dharshana, winning Gold. In the end, Sri Lankan juniors accounted for 3 Gold Medals.

Pasindu Kodikara (400 metres), Amasha De Silva (100 and 200 metres) and Dilshi Kumarasinghe won a Silver Medal each. Dilshi Kumarasinghe went one step further ahead when she won the Bronze in the 800 metres event. Romeshi Aditiya, Sachini Divyanjali, Amasha De Silva and Dilshi Kumarasinghe teamed up in the 4 X 400 relay team to pocket the Bronze medal. In total, Sri Lanka won 9 medals. (SJ)
